The Discovery Channel will be airing an hour-long medical documentary called “An Emerging Epidemic: Food Allergies in America” which focuses on… you guessed it… food allergies! The show will discuss things like living with life threatening food allergies, raising awareness, and the research that is being done to find a cure. I am beyond thrilled to hear that FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) has joined up with The Discovery Channel to spread awareness like this!
“An Emerging Epidemic: Food Allergies in America” will show twice during the month of September. I wish it would air at a better time, but I guess that is what DVR’s are for right? It is scheduled to air on Saturday, September 7th and Saturday, September 21st at 8am ET/PT time. The show is made possible from funding from Mylan (makers of Epipen) and FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education). If you don’t have the Discovery Channel, you can watch the show online here, and it will also be available on Itunes.
I know the number of people with food allergies is increasing daily, but I don’t think I ever considered food allergies as an epidemic. I have always associated the word epidemic with highly contagious, airborne illnesses, such as the flu. However, being that food allergies are not contagious or spreadable like a virus, I didn’t quite understand how they could be considered an “emerging epidemic”. The internet is a beautiful thing, with so much information at our finger tips, so I went to Wikipedia.com and looked up the word epidemic. I found that an epidemic does have to do with the spread of a disease, but more so that the number of people who have a specific disease is significantly higher than the number expected. That says to me that food allergies are increasing at an alarming rate.
